Synopsis

Advanced Fluid Mechanics covers all major aspects of incompressible advanced fluid mechanics in a single volume. While an introductory course in fluid mechanics is a recommended prerequisite, the text stars from fundamentals to develop the general theory. From this, it proceeds to a study of inviscid flow in two and three dimensions, viscous flow including both viscous and thermal boundary layer theory, flow stability, turbulence, and a succinct introduction to computational fluid dynamics. It offers exceptional pedagogy, for both class-room use and self-instruction, including many worked-out examples, end-of-chapter problems, and actual computer programs that can be used to reinforce theory with real-world applications. Numerical methods are introduced throughout the text where appropriate.

The text introduces three-dimensional fluid mechanics to the engineering student, using classical theory accompanied by modern computational methods. Unfamiliar mathematics is explained in the text and in a mathematical appendix. The approach to the individual aspects covered are embedded in the real world, showing the student how the idealizations learned can be put to use for solving complex engineering problems.
